Cork to bid for Worlds

e-mail from Derek Lande

Hi,

I am pleased to announce that the University College Cork Law & Philosophical Societies will be lodging a bid to host the World University Debating Championships in Cork, Ireland in 2008/2009.

We hosted the European Championships in 2005, and have hosted the largest Irish Intervarsity for the last four years. This combined with breaking two teams at last years World Championships leads us to believe we have a team with the experience to host one of the best worlds ever.

The proposed Convenor is Mr. Art Ward of the UCC Law Society. The proposed Chief Adjudicator is Mr. Derek Lande of the UCC Philosophical Society. We are also delighted to announce that Mr. Bob Nimmo has agreed to come on board as our tabs director.

We will be releasing more information to the debating community in due course, but we just wanted to let people know that there will in fact be somebody bidding for worlds this year. In the meantime if anybody has any queries please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me on derek@lande.com.

In the meantime we look forward to seeing many of you at UBC Worlds and will hopefully be welcoming you to Cork in two years time.

World Schools DVD

e-mail from the Welsh Org Comm

Dear all

The Welsh Centre for International Affairs is delighted to announce the launch of a commemorative DVD covering the 2006 World Schools Debating Championships.

Many of you will remember the cameras that followed teams during the tournament in July. One of those film crews was working for media4schools, an organisation which helps students to put together broadcast-quality films. The fruits of their labour are now available for all!

The film is approximately 35 minutes long, and includes extracts from debates, interviews, and footage of many of our social and other events. Each DVD costs £12, which includes postage to any country in the world. We have set up a PayPal account, which means that you can pay with all major credit cards.

To order your copy, please visit
www.wales2006.com and follow the link from the front page.

Best wishes

Martin Pollard
