Public access to the debates

I've had a number of queries from people wanting to attend the championships and watch debates. The best info I have is from an article in "The Province" newspaper

Several of the debates are open to the public: preliminary rounds on Dec. 29 at UBC's student centre starting at 9:30 a.m.; elimination rounds on Jan. 2 at the Wall Centre starting at 8:30 a.m.; and Jan. 3 at the Wall Centre at 9:30 a.m. and then at UBC's Chan Centre at 2 p.m.

I hope to be in communication with UBC later and will attempt to confirm the details with them.

Canadian time zone Blogs & Websites

As I'm not in UBC and much of the action will happen in the middle of the night Irish time I'll post a summary of relevant info from various sources as I get info but if I find any other blogs etc I'll post the links.

Ciaran Lawlor (the convener of last years worlds at UCD) has just started a blog of events at UBC. It can be found at 1stpropinthefinal.blogspot.com.

http://www.apdaweb.org/forum and http://www.cusid.ca/community/ are the main North American Debating discussion boards.

For an Australian view Peter Black Black is posting some updates but it is not clear if he is in Vancouver or like me is at home but in contact with people in UBC. http://www.freedomtodiffer.com It's not dedicated to Worlds but some postings may update on results from Australian teams.

Matthew Sinclair (one of the finalists in the Masters) has a blog which can be found at http://sinclairsmusings.blogspot.com/. Like Peter it's not dedicated to Worlds but some postings will be.

Cork and Botswana bid for 2009

Following last night's preliminary council meeting I can now reveal that there are two bids to host the World Debating Championships in 2009. As was made public last week Cork (Ireland) are one with Botswana the second bidder.

The decision will be made by council on New Years day.

World Masters update

The Masters rounds were held on Thursday. They are now down from 24 teams to the final 4.

The finalists will be:
1 England A (Jessica Harvey Smith & Neil Harvey Smith)
2 Australia A (Nicole Lynch & Victor Finkel)
3 Quebec A (Matt Sinclair & Ali Dewji)
4 England D (Jessica Van Der Meer & Andrew Marshall)

The final will be held on Tuesday 2nd January

The motions were:
This house would designate one city to permanently host the Olympics
This house believes that governments should provide heroin addicts with safe injection facilities.
