WUDC Equity committee

Dear World Debating Community,
It has been my absolute pleasure to serve you as Women’s Officer throughout the year and as acting Secretary throughout the most recent championships. I wish all the very best to Julia Bowes (the reigning champion from the University of Sydney) who takes over as Women’s Officer and will no doubt discharge that honourable position with the same diligence she takes to her debating. Mr Steve Johnson from the university of Alaska, is taking over as secretary and I will be handing all the auto-formatting and vote calculating tricks I created, he will no doubt be an incredibly valuable addition to Worlds Council and I wish him all the best in that role. The minutes have been forwarded to the executive and will be ready for ratification at the next council meeting. However, in order to finalise the minutes, the registrar, Mr Neill Harvey –Smith needs an email from all country and regional representatives to confirm who sat in those roles (especially if those persons changed during t he meetings) and also to facilitate contact during the year. Equity Policy Subcommittee
One of the resolutions of the Women’s Forum and of Worlds Council was to create a mandatory equity policy for future tournaments. This will take the form of the CUSID model which is to insert a statement of principles into the constitution which must be embodied in an equity policy that is then written by the host of any tournament governed by that constitution. This will give tournament hosts extra powers, reduces their liability and ensures that if harassment occurs at the tournament, for whatever reason, there is official recourse, even if the domestic legislature does not recognize harassment in the same way the World debate community might. I was appointed chair of the subcommittee by the Chair of Council and am now calling for applications to fill that subcommittee (I expect to be overwhelmed as I was immediately after council.) I would like to try and get as much regional representation as possible, and am particularly interested in people who have experience writing, dealing with and applying codes of conduct. In the issues of efficient bureaucracy (what an oxymoron!) I will need to limit the size of the subcommittee but will try not to do that excessively (10-15), if overwhelmed with applications I will need to be selective. Sorry. The equity policy will address harassment on the grounds of: gender, race, religion, physical appearance, disability, language, nationality and will hopefully establish minimum standards of behaviour to ensure all participants have an enjoyable tournament.

A personal plea
My camera was stolen 30 minutes after I arrived in Italy, the replacement drowned in the lakes near Salzburg and my third camera in less than a year went missing at the Championship Dinner. It never turned up at the Sheraton which means someone in the debating community must have accidentally picked it up. I understand that all cameras these days all look the same, but I would really love my camera back and am prepared to offer a USD100 reward (Australian dollars would be like offering a reward in Argentinian pesos). If it wasn’t entirely picked up by accident I would love the memory card back (there are some irreplaceable photos of my holiday on there) for which there is a USD$50 reward. It’s a Canon IXUS 50 camera with a 512MB memory card and a ridiculous number of pictures of NYC and a girl in a red dress.

Rotterdam Open

Dear debaters,
The Rotterdam Open 2007 will take place on the 14th and 15th of April.

For those of you who have never been there, the Rotterdam Open is fantastic value for money: Europeans-style motions, excellent adjudication (N-1 and Euros and Worlds breaking local judges), a friendly atmosphere and plenty of alcohol and food. This year, debaters pay 20 euros and judges participate for free. Crashing costs are 7 euros pppn.

This BP tournament consists of six preliminary rounds, followed by semi finals and the final. The evening program includes a barbecue, pool bar, dining at a restaurant, and clubbing in Rotterdam and/or visiting a coffee shop or two.

Rotterdam is very conveniently located. Aside from having its own airport, Rotterdam is also merely an hour's train ride away from the Amsterdam and Eindhoven airports. The Brussels airport is 2 hours away. So chances are you can get here conveniently by low cost carrier.

University of Limerick IV

The University of Limerick IV will be held on March 23rd & 24th and it the last major IV before Europeans. It has traditionally been a very high standard with teams and judges (including Worlds DCAs) from Ireland, UK, US, and across Europe.

The University of Limerick is 20 minutes from Shannon Airport which has flights from around Europe (it is a hub for Ryanair), North America and the Middle East.

Trinity IV

Hello,
This year's Trinity IV is running from 25-27 January at Trinity College in Dublin. 16 elite teams will compete on Thursday in the Kingsmill-Moore Invitational Trophy. Then on Friday and Saturday, Worlds Finalist Gregg Ó Ceallaigh and International Mace Winner Barry Glynn will co-CA the Dean Swift Inter-Varsity with 80 teams competing through 5 preliminary rounds & 3 knockout rounds. All that in the company of free wine, free beer, pizza on Friday, full dinner on Saturday, three great nights out in Dublin, the best movie presentations, and the Trinity IV's unique atmosphere, craic and style.

The Southampton University Debating Society is very proud to announce theSouthampton Open, a packed one day tournament to be held on Saturday the 3rdof March. We'll have 4 rounds of debates, followed by a great evening mealand gala final. Then once the debating is over you'll have free entry to ourlegendary union nightclub The Cube. Crash will also be available for theSaturday night so you can make the most of it!

We also guarantee the two things that really make an IV enjoyable -interesting motions and excellent judging throughout. Registration is now open at a cost of £30 per team, the make-up of which isup to you bearing in mind it's an open tournament. N-1 will not be enforcedbut is encouraged, especially for institutions sending 3 or more teams.

Deree Invitational

The Deree College Debating Club is pleased to announce the Athens 2007 - XXX3 Invitational Deree College Debating Tournament that will take place on April 19-22, 2007. This tournament is an excellent opportunity to prepare for Europeans in Turkey.

Our adjudication team is spearheaded by Can Okar, European Champion 2003 and CA of EUDC 2007.

5 preliminary rounds breaking into semi-finals. There is no institutional cap. We have an n-2 rule in place for judges.

You can fly to Athens using various low-budget carriers, such as easyJet from Berlin, London and Milan, SkyEurope from Krakow and Virgin Express from Brussels. Check with us for travel advice on low-budget airlines from other countries. Train services also operate between Athens and Balkan capitals for as low as € 100 round trip - check with your national rail operator or contact us for more information.

SMU Hammers

Hullo all
The SMU Debating Society hosts the Annual "SMU Hammers" AsianParliamentary Debating tournament. This year, we'd like to make theHammers a Pre-AUDC tournament and have tentatively fixed the date asthe 5th and 6th of May, i.e the weekend before ITB AUDC begins. The tournament will follow the Asian Parliamentary format, with the AUDCtabs and feedback system.

The Hammers in the past has seen participation from top debatinginstitutions in Singapore and the region, and will provide goodpractice and competition for teams participating in AUDC.

We're working on providing subsidized accommodation and meals forInternational Teams who are keen on participating, so do let us knowas soon as possible.

We'll keep you updated on the final dates and registration amount forthe tournament as soon as possible.

Labels to posts & RSS

As some of you may have noticed just before worlds I revamped the site and changed to the new version of blogger. One thing I didn't do at the time was put labels on every post. I will do that over the next few days.

I'm posting this in advance just to warn anyone using an RSS feed that you may see old posts move to the top as I update the labels and re-publish the posts. For those of you using the main website to read the posts you should see no change while the work is being done. Once complete people can pick through the archive based on specific topics (e.g. see all posts on Worlds or Asians etc).

Update: Thanks to Mark Dowling's Tip on how to use blogger the labels update is now complete.
