According to Can Okar, Chief Adjudicator of the upcoming European Universities Debating Championships, the team cap of 132 for this year's EUDC was met in 3 and a half hours after pre-registration opened last Monday.

Under these circumstances the team cap has been extended to 148, while the full list of the institutions that are eligible to enter the second phase of registration is available in the e-mail that Can Okar sent to the mailing lists on Tuesday.

The deadline for paying the registration fee via credit or debit card is May 20. For more information refer to the EUDC website at www.eudc2007.com

EUDC 2007 Announcement

It gives me great pleasure to announce that pre-registration for the European Universities Debating Championships 2007 at Koç University, Istanbul will open at 9am (current summer CET) on 2nd April 2007.

Our website is http://www.eudc2007.com, which is now open for your general perusal. As you will see, the registration tab is there but we would ask that you don’t pre-register before the hour we have given. If you do, those registrations will not count. The reason is fairly simple: we want to ensure that everyone has heard that registration is opening so that everyone has a fair chance.

We would advise that you read through to the end of this mail if you are interested in joining us in August. We would also advise, without making anyone panic, that you should pre-register as soon as possible. There appears to be quite a lot of interest from across Europe so make sure you get your institution on the list.

Registration General Rules

All registration must be done at our website (www.eudc2007.com).

If you have difficulty with this website, the registration page is at http://www.eudc2007.com/pre-register.html.

Total team cap is 132 teams.
The n-1 Rule applies to all institutions.
The institution cap is 4 teams

How Registration Works

Registration will be done in 3 phases:

Pre-registration commences on 2nd April 2007 at 9am (current time in Germany, France etc, so 8am for IONA and 10am for Turkey).
The second phase of registration is payment and lasts from 15th April to 20th May 2007.

The third phase is from 21st May to 1st July 2007. In this phase, those teams that have paid should let us know their details on a form provided at this website.

Payment
We will accept payment only by credit or debit card. If this is a problem, contact the Convenor, who will find an alternative route for payment. Registration is €140 per person.

If you have any queries regarding registration or the information on our website, feel free to contact me. I’m looking forward to seeing you on August 5th 2007 at Koç, the only tournament where two continents meet.

University of Pisa win 2008 World Championships

In a shock development today the University of Pisa became the first Italian and ESL team to win the World Universities Debating Championships.

The tournament will be held from 28th December 2007 to 4th January 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand. However the closing date for initial registration was reached on March 31st with only the University of Pisa having entered the competition. Thus the 3 teams of the University will battle it out over 9 preliminary rounds, Octo Finals, Qtr Finals, Semi Finals and a final.

A source close to the World Championships said that while they were disappointed with the level of interest in the tournament they had to accept the communicated deadline. "We had hoped for around 100 times more teams but we were clear about the registration deadline and have to stick to that out of fairness to the team who registered on time. At least a swing team will get to be the first Thai team to speak in the final which is a fantastic achievement."

When asked to comment on the University of Pisa’s impending victory and the surprisingly low turn out for the competition Colm Flynn, founder of the blog “World Debating News” responded, "Oh God! I forgot to post that registration e-mail. Lising is going to kill me! Oh Bugger no!".

When contacted for comment a clearly delighted member of University of Pisa Debating Society responded “Che cosa? Non parlo inglese. È questo il primo aprile?"

Update: At this stage it is past midday in most time zones that hit on the site so yes in case anyone didn't guess that was an April Fools post. Hope some people found it funny. And now back to our regular humour packed programming....
