Cambridge IV 2007

Dear All,
We are pleased to inform you that registration for the Barclays WealthCambridge IV is now open. There will initially be a team cap of 2teams per institution but if you would like to send more teams do let us know when registering and we will try to accommodate such requestswhere possible. Places will be allocated on a first come, first servedbasis. International institutions who have sent 3 teams to Oxford willalso be allowed to send 3 teams to Cambridge. The n-1 judging rulewill apply to all IONA institutions.

The competition will be held on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th November 2007.

The cost of registration is £65 per team. There will be no cost for judges. As in previous years all debates will have open motions and there will be 5 rounds, breaking to semis.We are delighted to announce Jo Read as our CA. Jo is a former Convenor of the IV and has judged a Worlds Quarter Final, Welsh Universities Mace Final twice, the International Schools Mace Finaland the Final of the Cambridge IV four times.

University College Dublin L&H IV

To the Debating Community at large,

The Literary & Historical Society, University College Dublin is delighted to announce that the P&G sponsored, Vice Presidents' Cup Inter-Varsity 2007 will be open for registration next Wednesday the 22nd of August. This year it will take place on 2nd and 3rd November 2007. It will be convened by me, James Mountjoy!

With a Novice IV on the 1st of November, also sponsored by P&G. This competition will be convened by the eminently more attractive and equally capable Katie Gill.

Speeches will be seven minutes in length and, as always, the quality of adjudication will be beyond compare. This year we are proud to have Ciaran Lawlor, DCA at Assumption Worlds 2008, as our CA.

ESU European Parliament IV Draw

The ESU European Parliament IV, due to be held at the University of Strathclyde on February 2, 2008, will bring together 16 teams from 16 different EU member states after ESU Scotland received funding to run a series of events commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. Out of the 30 universities from 17 countries that applied, here is the list of participants for the IV:

Glasgow to bid for EUDC 2009


David Tait of the University of Glasgow created a group on Facebook promoting their prospective bid for EUDC 2009. The last IONA hosts were Durham in 2004 and Cork in 2005. According to the group, the key people of the bid are Euan J. Baxter, Convenor of Debates 2007-2008, with the Co-Convenors being David Tait and David Adams. For more information join the group here.

Worlds MINI and South-East Asians 2007 Announcements















Dear all,

After a decade later debating community of Bangladesh for the first time has taken a massive initiative to arrange The Biggest Global Debating Championship in Bangladesh which will be organized by Bangladesh Debating Council-BDC and will be hosted by one of the Best Debating University of Bangladesh; Islamic University of Technology-IUT. Before Thailand Assumtion Worlds 2008; all the international teams will get the chance to refill their debating preparation in World MINI 2007 which is shaped to help the 28th WUDC preparation. The IUT 1st Bangladesh Open 2007 will also decide the South-East Asian Intervarsity Debating Title 2007 where teams from South-East Asian Universities will battle for this crown.

We are looking for the most experienced Worlds, Australs and Asian DCA's, Best Debaters of these championships and the most experience Debate Coaches who are world wide recognized for their contribution for the CA External and the DCA of this Championships. I will be the Chief Adjudicator and there will be another External Chief Adjudicator with six international DCA's to run the Worlds MINI and South-East Asians 2007 Championships.

We are also working with the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr. Muhammad Unis of Bangladesh for International Youth Micro Credit Summit 2007 and other internationally respected Micro Credit specialist for conducting this summit which is specially arrange for the participating teams of Bangladesh Open 2007. All the participant of this championship will be a valued part of this Summit during the Worlds MINI 2007.

Oxford top IONA rankings

Jonathan Leader Maynard updated his IONA rankings with results from Istanbul's EUDC, which brought this debating season to a close. Oxford ranked first with 880.8 points while EUDC winners Cambridge finished second with 822.3 points. St. Andrews and University College Cork got third and fourth respectively, while the top 10 also includes University College Dublin, Manchester, Durham, Middle Temple, LSE and Glasgow.
