Philippine National Debate Championship 2007

Dear all,

The Philippine Military Academy opens its door to its civilian counterparts for the first time. On 21-27 October 2007, the country’s premier military institution will host the 9th National Debate Championship. This is the first time that civilians will be allowed to look more closely into an institution that has long been a part of history yet clouded with so much mystery.

This event will gather colleges and universities from all over the country and pit them against one another in an exciting display of talent in Public Speaking. Students from all over the country will be given the rare chance not only to compete in a friendly debate but will also be given the chance of a lifetime of experiencing PMA life.

In last year’s 8th National Debate Championship which was held at the University of Baguio, the Academy’s Discussion and Debate Society participated for the first time. Although, first timers, they managed to impress the other participants even bagging the top prize in the Public Speaking contest. In the selection for the venue of the next Debate Championship, the cadets wowed the body with their stories of cadet life arousing the curiosity of most present. In the end, PMA won the bid.

The event promises a different experience to the participants allowing them to witness spectacles of cadet life like a Silent Drill Performance in the Opening Ceremony, a tour on the different training facilities which includes all the confidence courses that the cadets go through. They will also be allowed to enter the cadet barracks for an open house followed by ranks inspection and the traditional Parade and Review. A Cadet Hop, which is a formal dinner, will also be held.

There are four packages available where participants can choose. These packages will include billeting, food and a bus ride from Manila to PMA and back. For more details just click on the links provided in this website.

New Blog for European Debating

So far, there was no single source from where to find out about debating events in Europe, but now there is: europeandebating.blogspot.com.

Although it's only a trial for now, this site is dedicated to collect information on debating events all across Europe on any level. It aims to give a complete overview of all debating events, be it school, university or otherwise, regional, national or international and in any language. It includes a calendar to easily keep track of events.

To keep it small and useful, this site will only advertise future events - and leave reports etc. to the well established sites.

For now it will publish the events that are posted across the major lists. However, we may be missing many small events this way, so if you have info on those, please just send me an e-mail.

Anyone interested will be granted publishing rights, this goes especially for country reps of course - just contact us, please.

Please pass the info on to any event organizers you know about and spread it to your own lists.

Best,
Jens

Leiden Open 2007

Hello everybody,

The Leiden University Debating Society 'De Leidsche Beck' is proud to announce the Leiden Open 2007.

This BP-debating competition will be held on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th October 2007 at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. The competition will consist of 5 preliminary rounds (2 on Friday evening, 3 on Saturday), breaking to semi-finals. Our CA Alex Ward and DCA Leela Koenig will reside over a very experienced judging pool. Teamcap is set at 40 teams.

We plan to bring some of the best debaters from the continental and the Irish/English circuit together in Leiden. The city is located near Amsterdam Airport, a hub for lowcost carriers all over Europe. Crash will be provided to all international participants. Crash accomodation for Thursday and Sunday is available on a first come, first served basis for those of you who want to stay a bit longer.

Registration is open now and the participation fee will be 50 euros per team, and 15 euro per judge. Composite teams are allowed and even encouraged, but it would be very much appreciated if societies will send (good) judges along.

The Leiden Open 2007 will have great debating and good parties in one of the prettiest cities of Holland, and it provides an excellent opportunity for both established and new debaters to come to The Netherlands and experience just how much fun international debating tournaments can be.

Hope to see you in October,
