Victoria win New Zealand Easters, and the final hasn't even happened yet.

Victoria Wellington have guranteed to make it 10 wins on the trot at the New Zealand University Impromptu Debating Champs (also known as NZ "Easters") by getting two teams to this year's final.

In the first semi final Vic 2 (Yogesh Patel & Ihaia Tichborne) defeated Canterbury 1 on the motion that that developing countries should always host the Olympics.

In the second Semi Final Vic 1 (Polly Higbee & Richard D'Ath) defeated Vic 3 (Ella Edginton & Kathy Scott-Dowell) in the final on the motion That employers should be able to discriminate on religious grounds.

Latest phase of EUDC rego now open.

Dear debaters,

We are glad to announce that Phase 3 of registration is now open!

Phase 3 will stay open until 15 May. Every participant should now find the confirmation e-mail received after registration and use the password in the e-mail to log in to our website. You will find the ‚Login' button in the upper right corner of our website http://www.eudc2008.eu/. We ask you to provide ALL the required information by 15 May.

After logging in you will also find the Estonian Air promotional code in the travel details section. Please note that this code is meant for use by participants only. For more information about the discount see my previous e-mail or check our website (Host city – Getting to).

PASSWORDS. I know many of you still don't have a password for Phase 3. The reason might be that at registration your name and e-mail address was not entered at all (there are many xx's registered) or it was faulty. If you are missing the password or it doesn't work, please send me an e-mail to info@... and I will help.

Please note that the passwords are for personal use! Every participant has to log in with his/her personal e-mail and password and can see and change only his/her personal information. So you were not supposed to receive one common password for your team or for your institution, but a password for personal use. If you now realize that you are missing the password, contact me and we'll solve the problem.

REGISTRATION. As the payments deadline was 13 April, we do not yet have a full overview of the final number of confirmed teams and judges. We have already had a few cancellations, too. During this week it will be decided if we need to open the registration once more to fill the remaining places. If we decide to do this, we shall post a notification a few days in advance on our website. Please stay updated.

Amsterdam Open

Dear Debaters!
The second Amsterdam Open will take place in less than two weeks on the 25th and 26th of April. It promises to be another great tournament, with close to sixty teams now registered. And you can be one of them, if you register before Saturday the 19th of April!

We haven't been able to organise a heat wave, like last year, but the weather will be better than it has been for weeks. We have been able to organise great motions, movies and a wonderful weekend in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. We offer an excellent opportunity to get a taste of the nightlife, with a pub, club, whiskey or gay tour on Friday, and to get a view of the city, with walking and cycling tours on Sunday the 27th.

Loyola Marymount Wins US Universities

Loyola Marymount University (Alexander Schwab & Kevin Kiley) won the 2008 United States Universities Debating Championship (held in Worlds style) hosted by Portland State University.

In the final they defeated
Claremont Colleges (Charles Sprague & Kari Wohlschlegel)
Seattle (Michael Imeson & James Kilcup)
University of LaVerne (Rob Ruiz & Thomas Allison)

The top speaker was Kari Wohlschlegel from Claremont Colleges.

Alaska (Michelle Hart & Aimee Stanley) were the top Novice team and Dennis Sapranov (Regis) was the top Novice Speaker.

The University of Vermont beat Colgate University for the right to host the tournament in 2009.

ICRC IHL Debate 2008

Hello fellow debaters
UT MARA Debate Society in collaboration with the Student Representative Council of Law Faculty together with ICRC is proud to host the next ICRC International Humanitarian Law Debate 2008.

This tournament will be held from the 2nd to 5th of June 2008 at the Law Faculty of UiTM Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. This tournament will be using the Australs style of debating for obvious purpose as of which it is near the Australasian season. The theme for this year's tournament is "War, Suffering & Humanity".

The registration is now open. Please be noted that this tournament is open to ALL, law or non law students. The fee for each person (debaters, adjudicators, observers) is only RM60(including food). For those who require accommodation, it is upon request. As of now, the accommodation fee for non-UiTM participants is only RM15 per night, plus RM5 for laundry. We are still negotiating with the university administrator in reducing the fee.

The team cap for each institution is 6 teams, with only 3 breaking teams. The N=1 Rule applies for adjudicators.

For those who require invitation letters, we will post it up very soon in the Internet or we can send it to you by fax. Please be reminded that the deadline for registration is 19th May 2008. The details of methods of payment will be inserted together with the invite letters.

UYNGO FIRE tournament

On March, 28-30 in Kharkiv took place the biggest in the whole Ukrainian debating history International Debate Tournament “FIRE”.

The tournament was conducted by UYNGO “Debate Academy” – an organization established by Ukrainian debaters to develop and coordinate debate movement in Ukraine. It was also supported by Olesya Orobets, who is not only one of the youngest members of Ukrainian Parliament but also a former debater.

The opening ceremony took place on March, 28 at Kharkiv National Skovoroda Pedagogical University. There were 56 participant teams from Ukraine, Russia, Belorussia and Kazakhstan. That made “FIRE” one of the biggest Russian-language international debate tournaments and the largest in Ukraine.

The competition included a greeting from the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko:

• “Dear friends!
  I greet all the participants and guests of the intellectual-rhetoric game debates, who gathered on the hospitable land of Slobozhanschina.
  I wish everyone to show the ability to analyze and persuade with dignity, discover strong and weak sides of certain points, give estimation to facts and consequences from the point of view of their efficiency.
  Let this meeting strengthen respect and tolerance to the opposite points of view and contribute to your further realization.”

Teams participated in five preliminary rounds debating the following motions:

• “This house (TH) will prohibit to change sports citizenship”,
• “TH should prohibit mass media to inform society of terrorist organizations’ activities”,
• “TH should prohibit silicone implants”,
• “TH believes that one should divest driving licence for rule of the road persistent delinquency for life”,
• “TH should reform Commonwealth of Independent States”.

The quarter-finals motion was “TH should abandon nuclear-free status” and semi-finals – “TH believes that USA President should be elected through direct elections”.

The Finalists were:

• “We’llalldie” (Anna Kanevskaya & Tamara Babakova) Kiev,
• “16 to 12” (Danil Grachov & Tamara Komissarova) Donetsk,
• “Baltic Lion” (Sergey Naumov & Pyotr Gorovoy-Tkach) St.Petersburg, and
• “Eastside” (Igor Velichko & Anatoliy Fedorchenko) Donetsk\Mariupol.

After debating the motion “This house believes that the president should not have privileges” team “16 to 12” (Danil Grachov & Tamara Komissarova) took the cup and $300. Top-speaker, Sergey Naumov, won a mobile phone. Second place team took $200, and the third and the fourth – $100.

All Asians update

Dear All,
Its only few weeks away from the "15th All Asian Inter-Varsity Debating Championship". We, the OrgCom would like to draw your attention to a number of important issues.

1. As per our extended deadline, the last day of REGULAR registration is 21st April 2008. We understand due to the uncertain nature of international wire transfer we may receive the money after 21st April. However, we must receive the scanned copy of your payment (the document which proves you have made the payment through your bank) by 21st April to consider it as "REGULAR REGISTRATION FEE", otherwhise the teams will have to pay LATE REGISTRATION FEE.

2. If you don't send your payment early enough we will not be able to help you with visa. The idea is to send all the details of the participants to respective Bangladeshi Embassies on 22nd April. The 2nd batch of information will go to the embassies on 29th April but that might be too late. So send in your details by April 21st alongwith the payment.
Please note that we don't have any control over ON-ARRIVAL VISA.

3. If you are coming early, we can book cheap hotels for you. Please let us know your budget. We are also thinking of arranging a mini debate tournament/ training session for those who would come early. Our DCAs and Dr. Snider would be available from May 2nd.

4. Everyday we would provide you breakfast (starting from 8th to 14th) and dinner (starting from 7th to 13th). You may have to buy lunch 4 times. (Like I said million times, compared to other cities Dhaka is famous for cheap labor and food that doesn't cost too much!) Still, we are trying to bring it down to 3. Our food director will soon mail the menus to those who registered.
