Octo Finals to be streamed live

I understand that the idebate team are planning to stream some of the Octo finals live tomorrow.  Keep watching twitter and here for more info.

Some info from Worlds Council

Here is a brief summary of some of the main decisions at the World Debating Council meeting in Botswana.

Berlin won the right to host Worlds in 2013 defeating Zagreb 87-9 in the final vote.

Progress report from De La Salle shows Manilla Worlds 2012 on track and council ratified their hosting of the tournament.

The final financial report from Koc WUDC 2010 showed a 100,000 euro debt. All now paid. Warning to future tournaments to be careful of spending on hotel.
Lengthy and at times hostile discussion on the financial situation with Botswana WUDC 2011.  They were requested to provide a more detailed financial report than the one originally presented.  There were also complaints about the Visa situation, Socials, Security etc.

There was some discussion on the fact that 3 of the motions so far were also used in the Sydney Mini (R9 was from the final there) and Melbourne Mini tournaments (two motions were used there) earlier this year.  A motion was passed that at future Worlds the adjudication team should avoid setting motions that have already been used in one major competition in one region.

The proposal to expand the break to include all teams on 18 points was discussed and a decision postponed until a second meeting on 2nd January.

The discussion on reforming the registration process was shelved to next year

Council voted to support an initiative to hold an off shoot of WUDC in espanol in Caracas, Venezuela later in 2011.  I'm sure more details of this will be circulated.

Future adjudication teams are to disclose the criterial for awarding subsidy to judges to attent Worlds. This to be provided at the bid defense the year before and also reported on at council during the tournament.

Thanks to @jozefthenu for the updates from council.

Berlin to host WUDC in 2013

The World Debating Council have voted by 87 votes to 9 to award the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) to Berlin.

They defeated the bid from Zagreb in the vote held this afternoon in Botswana.

You can find more about their bid at http://www.wudcberlin.com/

Update: The actual result may have been 87-9.  The countries voting for Zagreb were Botswana (1), Croatia (4), Jamaica (2) and Turkey (2) which add up to 9 votes.  Everyone else voted for Berlin.

And we're in business.

Apparently break is being announced as we speak.

Waiting for the break.

Waiting for confirmation on the break.  One did flash up on twitter but it looked suspicious as it was dominated by only 4 or 5 teams.

Expect news any time now

Update:  Still waiting.  Anyone know any good online games?

Happy New Year 2011

I would like to take this chance to wish all visitors to this site a very happy, peaceful and prosperous 2011.

Things are running late in Botswana.  I'll try to find out what that does to the break announcement.  However I'm back from a quick trip to Cork to meet friends and drop my sister in law to the airport so now whatever time it is announced we'll be on line here until it's announced to keep you updated.

Full set of Round 6 results posted

Eoin Kilkenny has posted photos of the full set of results up to and including round 6 on his facebook page.

I was about to post the link to his account but then I realised he might get 400 friend requests to see the photos which might not be what he wanted.

So I'll post them here but FULL credit to Eoin for these and if he wants me to take them down again so he can get 400 friend requests I'll certainly do so......

It is in alphabetical order.  Points are 3 for 1st, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd and 0 for 4th.

Here are Steve Llano @stevellano and Mite Kuzevski @kuzevski

Steve is one of the best twitters, tweeters, (not sure what the correct name is) from Worlds and also runs a blog with interesting observations on Worlds.  Mite is organising the live stream of debates from Worlds.  If you are following Worlds on line you owe them (and a number of others) a debt of gratitude for keeping the world updated from Botswana.

WUDC Results after round 6

Once again very few available.  Only a couple of tweets so far.  Can you add to this list?

Assuming the break is 18 plus speaks teams need to be on 9 or more to still have a mathematical chance of making the break (the ESL and EFL breaks will be less).  Is it possible to score 9 points on the last day?  Well I have seen a couple of teams do it but it really is a case of doing it the hard way and they need to make sure their speaks are excellent to make up for the first two days.

Round 2 about to start.

Things are running behind schedule an Worlds but round 2 is about to
start. Round 3 is now scheduled for 6:15 local time.

Its not unusual for worlds to run late especially on the first day.
Its frustrating to those waiting around but so much happens behind the
scenes that small things can snowball to create lengthy delays.

Updating Worlds Archive

You may see the odd tweet or post popping up on the blog dealing with long past Worlds. I'm uploading my archive from past Worlds to the blog (hence the past Worlds links on the left). I am backdating them to over a year ago so they don't push new information down.

Updates from Worlds Day 1

http://www.botswanaworlds.com/node/76Some updates from the various blogs and twitter feeds:

There will be a livestream of video from the debates. Thanks to the International Debate Education association (IDEA) for Providing this service.  You can find the feeds at
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wudc
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wudc1
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wudc2
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wudc3

The official result of the adjudication test was a clear first and last and a tight call for second and third.
1st  Closing Opposition
2nd Closing Government or Opening Opposition (the adjudication team said the decision was a tight one and the key was for judges reasoning for the decision)
3rd Closing Government or Opening Opposition (the adjudication team said the decision was a tight one and the key was for judges reasoning for the decision)
4th Opening Government

Speaking of the adjudication team apparently James Dray has had to step down as DCA and been replaced by Vivek Ramsaroop from Botswana.  Why this is is not clear from the various feeds.

The Masters Competition has started and the motion for round 1 was "This House would buy local"

There seems to be some issue with Halal and Kosher food.  It's nearly a tradition at worlds.  It's getting to the point where Worlds Council nearly need to write a definition of Halal and Kosher into the constitution and make it clear that neither are the same as vegetarianism.

If a judge misses a round the organisers reserve the right to remove one of the teams from that judge's college from the tab.  Didn't think this was a big issue in the past (other than Athens when half the judges went on strike for Round 9) but no harm putting the boot in early and scaring people into staying in line :-)

Apparently teams have to take at least three points of information between the two speakers and at least one from each opposing team and from different speakers.  In theory it's great but I can see that causing chaos in some rooms.  When I was a speaker I loved to offer lots of points and I would have ripped the arms off my chair in frustration if I was accepted in the first couple of minutes and then basically had to wait 30 minutes until the next team to get in again.

If I come across any other info I'll post it.  The source for this comes from the various blogs I listed previously and from the Twitter feed.  Thanks to everyone in Botswana who is sending out info.

Covering Worlds 2011

Of course I'll be posting as often as I can over the next few days.  I'm not in Botswana as work and family committments mean I don't get to as many tournaments as I would like.  I am no longer a student and debating is a hobby rather than a career for me so I don't have the necessary financial resources backing me to allow me travel the world anymore.

However that should not be a disadvantage to covering the event. I have promises of regular updates from a number of people at Worlds and I will be monitoring the various blogs and twitter feeds to bring you the best possible coverage of events.

Of course there are a few tried and trusted sites I will be checking and you should keep an eye on also.

Twitter is often the most rapid source of updates. I suggest you check #WUDC and #botswanaworlds and #WUDC11.  Hopefully people would settle on one tag.  I suggest #WUDC for what its worth.

The organisers at Botswana tell me that they hope to update http://www.botswanaworlds.com/ with live updates and possibly video from the event.

http://yourgermancorrespondent.blogspot.com/ and http://achteminute.vdch.de/ has provided excellent coverage of worlds in recent years.  When you go onto the website the text may appear in German.  However just change the language on the blog to English and you will be able to read the posting.

Steve at http://progymnasmata.posterous.com/ has provided some excellent coverage of recent tournaments in North America and hopefully will continue to do so from Botswana.

Tuna at http://globaldebateblog.blogspot.com/ has been writing a daily diary of events so far at Worlds.

Some society blogs include
http://cambridgedebating.blogspot.com/
http://www.debattierclub-stuttgart.de/
http://www.stud.uni-potsdam.de/~wortgefechte/
http://nottinghamdu.wordpress.com/
http://standrewsdebates.wordpress.com/

I will add to the list as I find blogs updating on events from Worlds.
